Living with Technology

Today I noticed how cell phones have overwhelmingly taken over today's college student. When walking between classes, I constantly see people talking and texting while they walk. Then, I began to wonder who they might be talking to, and how important those issues that they were discussing was to them, and how they couldn't talk about it without the use of that cell phone. There oculd be a theory that today's college student has more social relations, interactions and thought processes in everyday life as compared to a college student 30 years ago, when cell phones didn't exist. I can understand the idea completely of relying on one's cell phone; when I incedently lost mine a while back I was, honestly yet unfortunately, socially empty. And to think of the thought processes of the technologically advanced people 30 years from now!

People always want their morals to be the same as the rest of the people around them. One mother may be more strict on their children then another mother. With the world wide web growing more and more accessible to youth, parents are questioning what should be allowed to be on the internet. After doing some research about Google, it is possible to remove information on a web site. If information is able to be removed, who decides what stays and what goes. In the American society, people want their to be censorship on everyone rather then self-censorship. There are advocates of these nationwide laws telling millions of people what the can watch, buy, lookup on the internet or even collect. Society wants to look down on the provider but if it is drawing that much attention, there are people who go this site for pleasure and if that site wasn't there, they would find other means in getting what they want. In the process of taking down one web site, another one can just as easily be created. There are censoring programs that parents can put on their computer for their kids as well as channel accessibility on cable. If people would worry about their personal life and doing something about it without forcing their views on other people, the world would self censor these things by cutting down the demand.

Mobile phones are considered by many as an essential part of modern day life, from the businessmen who uses the mobile phone as a vital link with the office, to the teenager who has the phone for recreational use. By using mobile phones are we damaging our long-term health just to stay in contact or worse simply just for a good image? Mobile or cellular phones have changed dramatically over the past two or three years. The new generation of phones now allow the user to connect to the Internet, send e-mail and even listen to the radio. The e-mail feature, a tremendous advancement in technology, allows businessmen to contact their office at anytime day or night. Not only can e-mail be used throughout the US but also messages can be sent globally. Sending e-mail is not nearly as expensive as the conventional methods of contact. Many mobile phone users claim one of the main advantages of ownership is the ability to contact friends or family in the event of an emergency. Most women who travel alone feel more secure knowing that in an emergency or breakdown they can get help without leaving the safety of their car. The mobile phone reduces the chances of being abducted or worse raped. But by having your mobile phones with you could be a silent killer.

Today was a really interesting day. I was asked to be the musician in my fraternity's IU Sing presnetation. First, I was originally the pianist but then I was moved to the drummer. Before I was told to use the synthetic drum machine built into the electronic piano. Then I realized that now it is possible for someone to create a genuine drum solo or riff without knowing how to actually play the drums. These technological advances in sound creation and music making has definatly expanded the range of people who can create music because the process is a lot simpler. Although, as more and more assisting technologies are added to sythensisers and pianos, the question is how much of music will actually be genuwine. This is evident in other fields such as the army. As equipment becomes more and more automated, the average soldier will be helpless without their gear. This could be a disadvantage because all our technology is run by electricity. If someone is able to destroy our source of energy, we have no skills without our machines.

Super Bowl

The Super Bowl was one to remember. As marketing and information travel grows more and more, there are many aspects to the Super Bowl that have really changed the entertainment of the game. One big thing is the power of advertisements. There where a hand full of interesting and funny commercials that people have grown accustomed to during the Super Bowl intermissions. Other informational technological advances in the presentation of the Super Bowl consists of the halftime shows. They are able to create a full size concert stage in a matter of minutes. The ability to make a speedy stage increase the appeal and presentation of the halftime show. I feel that the technological advances have made the Super Bowl that more enjoyable.

When I went to work the other night, I forgot my cell phone. There was a strange feeling in my stomach every time I went to check for it in my pocket. There was an obvious connection between me and my phone and I really hadn't noticed it until recently when I did not have it. This connection that I share with many of my peers is a glimpse into the future of humans reliance on technology. This cluch potentially lead to our dependency on technology but more importantly electricity. I'm going to start leaving my cell phone at home more often.

Well technically it is the 25th but to me its still the end of the 24th so im going to talk about today. I was excited to learn the my professor was interested in my paper about RFID chips. I was worried I did not do the assignment correctly but I learned quickly in class. A funny thing that I noticed today in my Econ class was the lack of technology. The prof just stands in front of the black board and just writes and talks and writes and talks all class period. Although she does use graphs and other drawn visual aids, I feel I would learn better if she incorporated technology in her approach in teaching us microeconomics. Because I am so bored in class I h don't listen and then I have to go over the same information again.
